Scale-up Start-ups Scene Event at Garage 664

As 2017 unfolded in the cosmopolitan city of Beirut, a new FNF Lebanon and Syria office pulled up its open-space gates to Creativity, Start-ups and Entrepreneurs. For the first time in many years working in Beirut the foundation endeavored to discover an unchartered topic. To familiarize with the topic of Entrepreneurship and start-ups, FNF collaborated with a start-up connect by enpact, a Berlin-based non-profit organization that aims on strengthening economic relations between young entrepreneurs from the startup scenes of the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. This collaboration launched the “Scale up the Start-up Ecosystem” on the 24th of February 2017.  An opportunity that brought together many start-ups from Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia, Egypt and Germany.
24 young entrepreneurs attended the event and participated in an interactive World Café. The event was facilitated by Ms. Stephanie Cox, a leader in start-up empowerment from Vienna.

The objectives of the event are:

  1. Connect Lebanese start-ups with start-ups in the MENA region
  2. Engage with the local start-up community in Lebanon
  3. Get insights on the needs and challenges of the start-up ecosystem in Lebanon
  4. Give a platform for Lebanese start-up to constructively connect with each other

The participants brainstormed solutions for the star-up ecosystem in Lebanon:

  • Bringing Human Capital in neighboring counties
  • Add course/training to existing curriculum
  • Approach Lebanese Universities (Build a platform “to fail”)
  • Teach coding and business
  • Fight Corruption (e-governance)
  • Establish Free Electronic Zone
  • Coordinate and work together and overcome the idea to work alone
  • Establish Free Tax Zone
  • Understand the concept of Social Entrepreneurship
